Title: Promoting the Belt and Road Initiative by Giving Full Play to Radio and Facilitating Media Convergence

Abstract

1. Role of Media in the Belt and Road

The media has contributed to the Belt and Road Initiative in three ways. The first one is to convey messages of various aspects about the Belt and Road to the countries along the route. The second one is to explain the intention of the Belt and Road Initiative to the countries along the route. The third one is to act as lubricant to enhance tolerance and understanding for cultures among the countries along the route and promote mutual trust.

2. Strength of Radios in the Belt and Road

Broadcasting organizations have advantages that other kinds of media don’t have when it comes to the Belt and Road. The first advantage is its cost and efficiency. Compared with other media, broadcasters can reach wider audiences at a lower cost. Moreover, features of broadcasters, such as mobility, portability and segmentation, help them better integrate with new media than other traditional media organizations. The second advantage is its solid foundation and rich experience. Domestic radios have gained much experience in broadcasting in the countries along the Belt and Road.

3. Experience of China National Radio

Regarding strategy formulation, China National Radio has planned its strategies based on multiple researches that delivered a host of findings. Regarding broadcasting, China National Radio has attached equal importance to traditional and emerging media. It has produced a range of large-scale programs, with language programs broadcasted in the countries along the Belt and Road. Regarding international cooperation, China National Radio has initiated and established a “Belt and Road radio collaboration network,” and put forth a proposal concerning cooperation at Radio Asia 2016 Conference.
