Title: The Media as Recorder, Participant and Driver of the Belt and Road Initiative —The Media's Role and Mission in Building the Belt and Road

 Abstract

With the advancement of construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, the media’s

role has become even more significant.

1. Media should respond quickly to the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and strive to be recorder, driver and participant of the initiative.

Faithful recorder. There are a lot of interesting stories in the Belt and Road Initiative, and it is media’s job to find out its new progress and highlights, and to report new achievements and breakthroughs in countries along the routes.

Forceful driver. As the initiative is being pushed forward, China and regional countries both need the media to pay attention to various changes and development trends.

Active participant. The Belt and Road Initiative is what China should be doing given its rising economic status in the world, and it provides a golden opportunity for Chinese media to play their due function in the international media arena.

2. Media must integrate several elements in their practices.

First, traditional media must be integrated with new media. When reporting on the vision of the Belt and Road Initiative and various types of actions, the new media platforms can play a more important role.

Second, integrate domestic media reports with storytelling narrative of target countries. When promoting China’s Belt and Road Initiative, the media should not only appeal to domestic audience, but also to overseas audience.

Third, domestic media should work with overseas media so as to better serve their readers. Central and local media organizations should not only expand their presence in the overseas market, but they also need to invite overseas market into China and let them see with their own eyes China’s social and economic development.

3. We must focus on the following three aspects to further promote the role of

the media in this regard. First, we must emphasize on research of theory and practice relating to the Belt and Road Initiative; second, we must conduct media exchanges between domestic and overseas media; third, we must form a coalition of force in terms of disseminating news on the Belt and Road Initiative.
