Title: A Thai Perspective on One Belt, One Road Initiative

Abstract

Countries in Southeast Asia have generally welcomed the Belt and Road Initiative as an answer to the needs for major improvements of their own infrastructure and an opportunity to deepen their economic connectivity with China. But their support for the initiative is also mixed with caution.

ASEAN has its own infrastructure development plans, including the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity that is designed to bring about a more integrated ASEAN community through infrastructure as well as institutional and people-to-people linkages. The challenge is how China and ASEAN can come up with a synergy to make sure that their connectivity plans complement each other.
