A special job fair was held on Nov. 27 in Xihongmen, Daxing District, for residents who lost their jobs due to a sweeping safety campaign in the wake of a deadly fire that claimed 19 lives on Nov. 18.

The Chinese capital launched a 40-day citywide safety campaign aimed at eliminating fire hazards and other safety problems in overcrowded apartments and warehouses that serve as storage areas, workshops or living space for workers.

Many people lost their jobs when their employers were told to shut down unsafe factories or warehouses during the safety campaign.

In response, the city held the special job fair in Xihongmen, and 27 companies are offering 508 positions including drivers, clerks, security guards and cleaners.

Li Hualong, deputy head of the Daxing District Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, said the job fairs are held monthly and the special fairs are mainly for those who became unemployed because of the safety campaign.

He said that the job fair this time was to make sure people who are impacted by the safety campaign to work in safer environment, adding that employers are required to provide or help provide accommodation for the employees.

More than 200 job seekers found jobs and signed contracts with employers at the job fair.

According to the Xihongmen township government, a team offering temporary assistance was put together to help those affected by the safety campaign.

Migrant workers can apply for temporary assistance from the group, and they can get temporary assistance after registration and confirmation.

For those deciding not to work in Beijing anymore, the assistance group will provide temporary accommodation and train or bus tickets for them to go home after confirmation.

More job fairs will be organized to help workers in the area to find new jobs, according to local authorities in Daxing District.
