The 9th International Conference on Intercultural Communication (ICIC 2017) is held in Wuhan University from Nov. 24-Nov. 26.

The 9th International Conference on Intercultural Communication, also known as ICIC2017  for short, was held in Wuhan University from Nov. 24-Nov. 26. Scholars from 17 countries and regions  discussed their latest research results in 14 forums. The Intercultural Consensus on the Belt and Road Initiative was concluded by the conference convener.


The conference not only includes an extensive range of papers written by scholars from the countries and regions along the Belt and Road  including China, Malaysia, Nigeria, Sri Lanka,Thailand, Pakistan, Singapore, Turkey, Iran, the United Arab Emirates,  the United States, France, Germany, Australia and Sweden.  

The  Intercultural Consensus on the Belt and Road Initiative was concluded by the conference convener on the basis of the opinions of the scholars who participated in the conference. The consensus  mainly encompasses the six points below:

1. Multiculturalism should  be focused  on "communication," and be the foundation of intercultural communication of the Belt and Road.

2. The practice of intercultural communication of the Belt and Road should be based on wisdom and methods of communication between polytechnic groups in Chinese culture, while absorbing wisdom from other cultures  in order to realize the "people-to-people bond."

3. Intercultural communication of the Belt and Road should turn to cultural elements that are more diversified and localized, that understand the validity and limits of mutual understanding, while promoting intercultural understanding in the context.

4. The building of intercultural discourse of the Belt and Road needs to show greater openness, inclusiveness and complementarity, that is, the ability of moral practice  between cultures.

5. The intercultural communication of the Belt and Road needs to build basic principles of inter-subjectivity, inter- culturalism and equal rights.

6. The practices of multiculturalism in intercultural communication of the Belt and Road is likely to create new innovative human knowledge and cultural interactions.

The "International Conference on Intercultural Communication" organized by Wuhan University is one of the most well-known conferences in the field of intercultural communication. The conference has grown out of the cooperation between Chinese and French universities since 2003.

The achievements of the conferences were included in nine academic books in three languages: Chinese, French and English. Furthermore, it has become an important academic platform for intercultural communication research in China.

This conference is co-sponsored by the School of Journalism and  Communication of Wuhan University, Center of Studies for Media Development of Wuhan University, Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at Universities authorized by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, the Research Centre For Social Development of Islamic Countries of Hebei University and the Think Tank of Research Alliance of Countries along the Belt and Road.
