The average heating temperature has risen to 19.1 degrees Celsius after Beijing began generating heating using clean energy as an alternative to coal. This is 1.2 degrees Celsius higher than before, according to a research report issued by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics.

The research shows that through generating heating by clean energy, Beijing made great strides in reducing energy consumption, adjusting energy structure, improving air quality and its residents’ general livelihood.

The research covers 536 households from 16 districts, with 149 households from urban areas and 387 households from rural areas. A total of 275 households changed heating supply from coal to air-source heat pump and ground-source heat pump, accounting for over half of the total. The number of households who use gas as heating supply reached 120, accounting for 22.4 percent of the total, while 18.5 percent and 7.8 percent of them use energy storage electric heater and electric boiler, respectively.

The research also found that heating temperature has risen. The average heating temperature in the city reached 19.1 degrees Celsius after switching to clean energy for heating, 1.2 degree Celsius higher than before, which is also higher than the 18 degree Celsius set as the goal in 2016 by the Beijing municipal government. According to the residents, this move not only reduced coal consumption, saved the trouble of burning coal during the winter, but also prevented fire risks and improved their quality of life.

According to statistics, several districts -- including Dongcheng, Xicheng, and the plain areas in Chaoyang, Fengtai, Shijingshan and Haidian -- have all switched to clean energy for heating. In rural area, from January to November in 2016, a total of 227,000 households from 663 villages switched to clean energy for heating. Among them, 198,000 households from 574 villages started using electricity for heating. This year, 700 villages are expected to receive heating generated from clean energy.
