The Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Planning, Land & Resources, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform, the Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission, and the district governments of Huairou District and Miyun District have jointly launched a global call to solicit holistic designs of the Huairou Science City, marking the start of the project to build a world-class science and innovation center in the capital.

Top domestic and foreign design firms have visited the site of the planned science city since the offer had gone out.

An official of the Beijing Huairou Science City Construction Development Co. Ltd said one large-size science device for extreme conditions and five advanced interdisciplinary platforms that are under construction will be partly put into operation in 2020, largely boosting China's scientific competitiveness as well as its science infrastructure.

The Huairou Science City has a planned area of 100.9 square kilometers. Forty square kilometers of the land will be set aside for the use of urban construction, about one fourth of which will be used to build large-size science devices and advanced interdisciplinary platforms. Centered around the large-size science devices, the science city will build several core areas such as the material science center, the space science center and the earth system science research center.

In the core areas, structures will be built without walls to create an open and shared space.

The science city will be landscaped with green spaces, city parks, core sightseeing areas, as well as small-scale and scenic blocks which for the scientists working here to conduct leisure activities.

In the area connecting the science city and the Yanqi Lake International Convention Center, a town will be built to provide commercial and cultural amenities for the science city.

The science city will be completed with education facilities such as reputable schools. The Beijing No. 2 Experimental Primary School, the Beijing No.101 High School and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences have opened blanches here. Other measures to attract talent include living provisions such as government-subsidized apartments and shared ownership housing.
