The Astor House Hotel, a famed hotel in Shanghai, has been closed its door for restoration in 2018, with locals turning out see the hotel one last time before it goes under renovation, reports chinanews.com.

Located in downtown Shanghai, the Astor House Hotel was opened over 150 years ago, and became the first western-style hotel that used gas, electric lights and running tap water on the Chinese mainland.

The hotel has played host to numerous celebrities, including British philosopher Bertrand Russell, German scientist Albert Einstein, and British comedian Charlie Chaplin. The hotel was also the site of China's first stock exchange.

The Astor House Hotel, formerly the Richards Hotel, was built by Scottish merchant Peter Felix Richards in 1846.

It was later expanded into a 5-storey facility in 1907, becoming one of the most famous foreign hotels in Asia.
