Man raises bear cub after mistaking it for puppy

Police in Lijiang, a popular tourist destination in the province, recently received a tip via their WeChat account that a local person may have been raising a bear.
The information soon proved true, as the animal spotted at the person's house was confirmed to be an Asiatic black bear, a second-class protected animal in China.
The person, surnamed Yang, was picking mushrooms on the mountain behind his home in 2015 when he came across a bear cub, which he assumed at the time to be a puppy, and took it home with him.
It was not until the bear grew older that Yang realized his blunder. However, he decided to keep the bear, which has since grown to weigh 80 kilograms.
Because Yang didn't have a license to raise a wild animal at home, local police took the bear away from him as a penalty in accordance with the fourth item of the 22nd provision of the Yunnan Terrestrial Wildlife Protection Law. The animal is now being temporarily sheltered at a local wildlife breeding base run by the Lijiang Forestry Bureau.
