The international community should develop a road map for peace, as peace will not happen automatically because of the goodwill of people or even the interests of countries around the world, said former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin on Wednesday.
He made the remarks at a release ceremony for the Chinese version of his new book, "War and Peace," in Beijing.
De Villepin said he had a strong belief that peace is not just a result of resolving tensions and ending wars, but rather that it has to be a main objective of the international community and requires rules, mechanisms and institutions.
The book, in his words, was based on his experience as a diplomat and his fears about the lack of understanding and culture of peace around the world. He said that the key to peace was trying to work on common principles, and he proposed three principles that he believed could help the international community move toward peace, namely respecting the sovereignty of all countries, pursuing long-lasting development, and agreeing on as well as striving for stability.
The statesman also analyzed the role of China's Belt and Road Initiative, which he called "a global and open" project, in promoting world peace.
De Villepin said that the initiative has facilitated the development of infrastructure in participating countries, which can enhance people's well-being and thus contribute to stability in those places.
He added that as more infrastructure is built, more connections will be created between different peoples, societies and countries, thereby reducing conflicts in those regions.
The ceremony also featured short speeches about the new book by Li Ruogu, former chairman and president of the Export-Import Bank of China; Zhang Baijia, former deputy director of the Party History Research Center of the CPC Central Committee; Zhu Chenghu, a professor from National Defence University of the People's Liberation Army; and Zhou Hong, president of the Chinese Association for European Studies.
The release ceremony was organized by Caijing Magazine, a weekly business magazine based in Beijing.
