The 21st China Beijing International High-Tech Expo (CHITEC) opened on May 17 in the old pavilion of the International Exhibition Center in Beijing. With the products of over 1,600 science and technology companies on display, the expo comprised of 16 themed exhibition sections is a celebration of the many scientific and technological achievements made in China.

An actual size model of the J-10 fighter jet, with a length of 16.43 meters and a 9.75-meter wingspan, greets visitors at the east gate of the pavilion. Within it are the stars of this year's expo -- achievements made in marine science and technology, such as the underwater robot Explore 4500, the underwater glider Sea-wing, and the polar expedition vessel Xuelong 2.

In addition, the pavilion shows off a simulation of the successful test-mining of flammable ice by the drilling platform Blue Whale I in the South China Sea last year, with a display using vivid lighting effects.

More than a dozen submersibles and vessels from China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation are also catching the eyes of the visitors. The Norwegian deep-sea salmon farms under automated operations by Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group are on exhibition as a milestone in deep-sea farming. Nearby sits a model of the longest cross-sea bridge, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, which cuts the road traffic from Hong Kong to Zhuhai from three hours to only 30 minutes.

For the first time in its history, this year's CHITEC has a section dedicated to technological integrations of military and civil uses in fields such as emergency rescue, telecommunication, facial recognition, and robotics.

In particular, laser printers and short-wave radio stations that served the military have become more civil-oriented. Drones that are capable of scouting and precision strikes could be transformed for agricultural sprays. Night vision systems that are equipped on military vehicles have also been adapted for civil use with lower costs.

Chip companies also draw special attention at the CHITEC this year. The Chinese chip industry's breakthroughs in producing flash memory chips -- previously solely imported products -- attracted the interest of many visitors. A microscope shows the visitors the intricate structures of the nano-sized chips.
