The idea that China's development relies on that of the entire world—and that the world's progress is likewise benefitted by China's—is the core philosophy underlying an upcoming international forum to be held in Beijing, according to a May 22 press conference.

Li Meng, vice president and news spokesperson of the Beijing People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (BPAFFC), announced that the 2018 Beijing International Forum on People-to-People Friendship will be hosted in Beijing from May 27 to May 29. Scheduled discussions will include a main forum on urban governance and youth communication, cultural exchanges, three panel meetings and a special youth event.

Themed "Promoting and Strengthening People-to-People Friendship and Bonds," the forum will showcase achievements of intercultural mutual learning, provide a platform to exchange urban governance experiences, and encourage young people of different countries to engage in personal exchange. He highlighted that young representatives from China, Japan and South Korea will join a workshop on innovation exchange and cooperative entrepreneurship.

According to Guo Wenjie, deputy secretary of the Communist Youth League of Beijing, young scholars and experts will address topics such as how youth diplomacy can serve top-level diplomacy, and how to better communicate and cooperate for development in the new era. He noted that relevant innovation and entrepreneurship projects are to be unveiled at the event as well.

The forum was first held in 2011 and three times biannually since then. Compared to previous sessions, this year's forum will put greater emphasis on pragmatic cooperation, as it concurs with the Beijing International Fair for Trade in Services, Li highlighted.

Li also underscored that this year's forum will be more international, including a wider range of participants and embracing approximately 80 foreign participants from civil societies, organizations and representatives of Beijing's sister cities in about 30 countries, including the U.S., Argentina, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Japan and South Korea, among others. Also attending will be representatives of embassies in China and offices of international organizations in Beijing, foreign experts and students working and studying in Beijing, as well as about 200 participants from relevant organizations in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei provinces.

The forum is co-sponsored by the Beijing People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the Beijing Association for Science and Technology, the Communist Youth League Beijing Municipal Committee and the People's Government of Xicheng District.

During the forum there will also be a photo exhibition, titled "Understanding Through Glimpses of Beijing," as well as a cultural tour.

The forum has previously played an active role in promoting practical cooperation and friendly consensus-building among civil societies from around the world, thus coming to be viewed as a brand project of people-to-people diplomacy and an important platform for Beijing to carry out mutual learning with international communities.
