Beijing will build its first bicycle freeway starting in September, according to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport and the Beijing Transport Institute.

The 6.5-kilometer highway will begin from the intersection of Tongcheng Street and Wenhua Road in Changping district, and end at the intersection of Shangdi West Road and Houchangcun Road in Haidian district.

To ensure the safety of cyclists, motor vehicles and electric bikes will be barred from the route.

The freeway will be completely separated from other roads, with on-and-off ramps at several key points.

Without any traffic lights, the freeway is designed to allow cycling at 20 kilometers an hour. Each lane is projected to accommodate 1,000 to 2,000 bikes an hour. The freeway will also include reversible lanes and passing lanes to optimize traffic flow.

The freeway is expected to complete by the end of next June.
