A restaurant selling cooked wheat noodles in Chongqing created headlines in recent days for charging 1,314 yuan (about US$205) for a single serving – described by some as a "sky-high" price, the Chongqing Morning News reported on Thursday.

The restaurant, located at the Minquan Road in the city, belongs to the Guzhou Wangcheng Food Co. Ltd. in Chongqing, and the costly noodles are served in the restaurant's private rooms.

One customer uploaded a photo of the dish to the internet, showing nothing more than a regular-looking bowl of noodles with cucumbers, minced meat and red peppers. However, it is reported that the order also comes with fruit, a beverage and dessert, and that customers are treated to a violin performance while dining in the private rooms.

Restaurant manager Mr. Hu explained that this set menu is offered particularly for couples and lovers, as the number "1314" sounds like "forever" in Mandarin, which by extension can mean a happy marriage.

Hu added that the restaurant promises an additional service – couples ordering the set who are still together three years later will be welcomed back to enjoy the same menu free of charge.

Despite the shockingly high price, customers are streaming in for the experience. According to the Chongqing Morning News, the restaurant's business has been so good in the past weeks that customers must make advance reservations to get a spot at a table.

Comments online reveal a range of public responses. Some have called it irrational consumption, while others simply doubt the price management. Some have also recalled a similar case three years ago, when a traveler was billed 2,000 yuan for a shrimp dish at a restaurant in Qingdao. The customer reported the case to the local police, which triggered a hot debate on illegal prices charged by certain restaurants.
