Beijing invests 1.3 trillion yuan on 276 municipal projects

Beijing will invest approximately 1.3 trillion yuan (US$200.6 billion) in constructing 276 major municipal projects this year, according to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on June 19.

Of the sum, 114 are new projects, and 43 projects are on schedule to complete this year.

The projects cover the coordinated development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province, the improvement of public services and people's livelihood, the enhancement of urban governance, as well as the construction of a high-end economic structure.

Relocating 80,000 people of four universities by 2022

Beijing plans to invest 2.53 billion yuan in 11 projects on relocating non-capital functions like education and medical care, among which 1.9 billion yuan will be allocated to construction and installation.

According to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the construction of new campuses of four universities including Beijing Technology and Business University and Beijing Film Academy in suburb areas is accelerating, and the city expects to relocate 80,000 faculties and students by 2022.

In addition, Beijing plans to start building or relocating four hospital branches or medical colleges in its suburban areas by the end of this year, which are expected to add 2,200 hospital beds and relocate 10,000 faculties and students.

New museum, theater, and library in sub-center

A number of new projects will kick off this year in the city's sub-center in Tongzhou district.

Beijing plans to start the construction of a museum, a theater, and a library as well as four projects including high school campus and hospital branches in the sub-center by the end of this year.

A new campus of Beijing Fifth High School will be commissioned this September.

In terms of public transportation, Beijing plans to carry out eight projects within the sub-center and 17 projects for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

The main project of the city's new airport will be basically complete by the end of this year.

A one-million-mu afforestation project

With 57 projects to improve public services and people's livelihood in education, fitness facilities, medical care and so on, 12 districts including Fengtai, Shijingshan, Changping, and Pinggu will witness new heights in their access to public services, according to the authority.

Moreover, the city will implement 12 projects to protect its historical heritage.

In terms of afforestation and ecological governance, the city will continue to push forward its one-million-mu (about 66,666 hectares) afforestation project, and plant trees on 200,000 mu of land this year in areas like the sub-center and the new airport.

Two subway line extensions by the year's end

Beijing plans to enhance its urban governance through 14 projects on energy and garbage treatment facilities and 64 infrastructure projects.

Public transportation is a major part of these projects. Among the 21 subway projects, two are subway extensions which will be completed and begin trial operation at the end of this year.

Meanwhile, the city will renovate its infrastructure for buses and around 90 kilometers of underground utility tunnels.

Also by the end of the year, the Daxing branch and the east main canal of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, as well as the mainline of water supply for the new airport, will be basically completed.

The construction or upgrading of several garbage treatment projects in the city will be finished this year as well, which will enhance Beijing's daily treatment capacity of domestic garbage, sewage, and other garbage in the city.

53 projects to develop high-end economic structure

Beijing plans to invest 30.3 billion yuan in 53 projects to develop a high-end economic structure.

Projects to be initiated this year include five out of 11 projects on platforms for scientific and technological innovation as well as big science equipment, and four out of 28 projects on modern services and advanced manufacturing industry.

Six projects, including the Xiaomi mobile internet industrial park, an institute of nano energy and systems of Chinese Academy of Sciences, an innovation and technology center of new energy vehicles, and the first-phase project of a standard factory for integrated circuits, will be basically built up in the city by this year.

In terms of culture and tourism, seven new projects will start this year, and a few venues for the 2019 Beijing International Horticultural Exposition and the supporting facilities will finish within this year.
