China's top legislature on Monday began an enforcement inspection of a law protecting the safety of farm produce.

It is the first inspection since the Law of the People's Republic of China on Quality and Safety of Agricultural Products went into effect in 2006.

Ji Bingxuan, vice chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, said as the law regulates agricultural production and safeguards product safety, the inspection is a key task for the incumbent NPC Standing Committee.

Ji and two other committee vice chairs -- Zhang Chunxian and Wu Weihua -- attended Monday's meeting of the inspection teams.

Separated into three groups, the teams will fan out to six provinces and regions between July and August while provincial legislatures in 11 administrative regions are asked to run parallel inspections within their jurisdictions.

Key aspects to be checked include the input, production, packaging, labeling, transport, storing, as well as the management of production bases and quality control mechanisms, among others.

A final report will be submitted to the top legislature in October.
