China to build national healthcare data network

China aims to set up a national healthcare data network for each of its 1.39 billion people. All the medical information about citizens, including their heart rates, will be collected to improve diagnosis and treatment, said Jin Xiaotao, chairman of the Chinese Health Information and Big Data Association, during a sub-forum of the 2018 China Top 500 Enterprises Summit on Saturday in Xi’an, the capital city of Shaanxi province.
To kick off the project, five regional databases will be set up in Fujian, Jiangsu, Shandong, Anhui and Guizhou provinces as a trial. Shaanxi hopes to be included in the plan too, according to Jin, who was also the ex-Vice Minister of China’s former National Health and Family Planning Commission.
Xi’an boasts unlimited business opportunities and great potential in the information security sector, said Gao Gao, member of the Standing Committee of Xi'an Municipal Committee of the CPC, and Vice Mayor of Xi'an. He made these comments during his speech at the sub-forum, which was themed information security.
“The information security industry in Xi’an was worth about two billion yuan (about US$300 million) in 2017, and grows 25 percent each year on average,” Gao said. “Xi’an looks forward to close cooperation with the relevant parties.”
Jin Xiaotao advocated a balanced relationship between information security and development. He said huge amounts of data will lead to the growth of a sizeable industry, which in turn would yield considerable economic and social interest.
Chinese premier Li Keqiang said in August, 2016 that China will guide financial institutions towards offering greater support to the health industry and make it a pillar industry in the nation’s economy.
“There is a lot more that enterprises can do in the health industry,” Jin said. Chinese real estate companies like Country Garden and Greenland Group have already ushered in the health industry, Jin added.
However, Jin also warned that China’s concept of information security and its legal system still lags behind its ambition. China should cultivate more talent, improve its technology as well as build a technology-sharing mechanism among enterprises, Jin suggested.
