Beijing will build more green ecological spaces, said executive vice mayor Zhang Gong on Sept. 27.

The capital will build at least one "urban forest" in each of its districts, as well as many small parks and pockets of green spaces, he announced.

In contrast with parks designed and built for the purpose of landscaping, urban forests are expected to improve ecological effects and provide suitable food and habitats for birds and animals. At present, many urban forests located in the core areas of Beijing, such as Xinjiekou and Caishikou, have already been built and opened to the public.

In recent years, Beijing has managed to upgrade 467 market centers and logistics centers and evacuate about 12,000 hectares of land through demolitions. In the meantime, the city has created public spaces and greening spaces for its residents, and the per capita public green areas in its core areas have increased by 8 percent in 2017 compared with 2015.

Zhang said that in the future, Beijing will continue to improve its ecological and environmental conditions by building at least one urban forest in each of its districts and constructing many small parks.

Beijing also plans to meet the requirements of a national forest city by 2025, providing a great ecological and environmental conditions for the city to build itself into a world-class harmonious and livable city.
