A man has been placed under criminal detention for beating a gynecologist over a dispute on giving a cesarean section to his pregnant wife, police in Beijing's Xicheng district said in a statement.

The 46-year-old man, identified by the police only by his surname Zheng, demanded that the gynecologist, surnamed He, give a C-section to his 44-year-old wife, surnamed Sun, at Peking University First Hospital in Beijing on the evening of Sept 22, but the doctor refused to do so, the statement said. Then, while He was trying to explain why, Zheng beat He using his fists, and He was forced to fight back, but was later stopped by others at the scene, it said.

Zheng's wife, Sun, and his 19-year-old daughter arrived later and Zheng and his daughter beat He once again. The gynecologist did not fight back, considering the safety of pregnant Sun, the statement said.

Sun gave birth to a girl the next day and needed family members to care for her, so the police did not detain Sun and his daughter immediately, the statement said.

Xicheng district's public security bureau detained Zheng on Saturday, and released his daughter on bail pending trial, considering she was still studying in college and that He had excused her, it said.
