On Oct. 17, the main structure of Qinghe Station--the largest railway station of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway--was completed. All construction at the station is on track to finish in the second half of 2019. The station is designed to handle more than 16 million passengers annually.

Connecting three subway lines

Eleven kilometers from Beijing North Railway Station, the newly built Qinghe Station sits close to Subway Line 13 and Beijing-Urumqi Expressway to its west. The project is undertaken by China Railway Construction Engineering Group and started last June. The station is scheduled to become operational before the end of 2019. It has a total building area of 138,300 square meters.

Han Fangchao, secretary of the Party branch of the Qinghe Railway Station Project of China Railway Construction Engineering Group, said that Qinghe Station is not only the largest station in the Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway, it is also the departure station for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. The station will also be the first railway station in Beijing to connect three subway lines.

Qinghe Station has two floors both above and below ground. The second basement floor is the platform for Changping South Extension Line and Branch of Subway Line 19. The first basement floor includes the city corridor, the transfer space for high-speed railway and subway, and an underground garage. Above ground, the first floor includes the entrance hall and the platform of the high-speed railway, along with the platform of Subway Line 13. The second floor is the waiting hall for the high-speed railway, and it is equal to approximately the size of three football fields.

Qinghe Station is scheduled to be ready for trial operations by June 30, 2019, and it will be formally operational on Nov. 30, 2019. After its completion, a new entrance for the station will be opened from Beijing-Urumqi Expressway, leading passengers directly to the drop-off area on the southern side of the station. A new road will also be built in its eastern side, connecting the drop-off areas in both its south and north sides.

An intelligent station

Li Jingzhong, director of the Station Project Management Department of the China Railway Beijing Group, said the main structures of eight newly built stations of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou high-speed railway and Taizicheng Station of Chongli Railway will finish construction within this winter, and that the construction of Qinghe Station has been the fastest. Qinghe Station is also the world's first high-speed rail station built with multiple intelligent technologies. For instance, garbage trucks are no longer needed thanks to a newly designed garbage transportation system — each dustbin is connected directly through pipes to the garbage area of the station.

According to planning, Subway Line 13 will pass through Qinghe Station at the end of 2018. The subway line will be laid parallel to the railway line so that passengers can get off the train and simply walk across to get on the subway.

Feng Xiaoxue, deputy chief engineer at the Institute of Architecture of China Railway Engineering Consulting Group, said that the design of Qinghe Station is based on a principle of inclusiveness. The construction area of the new station is more than 400 times larger than that of the old station, reaching more than 130,000 square meters. The new station has curved roofs, beam-shaped overhangs and other traditional structural characteristics to represent the style of the ancient capital of Beijing. And by using simple and powerful curves and supporting structures, the station displays the latest building technologies, which can highlight the capital's ancient charm and modern appearances.

Feng said the station was specially designed to be higher in the west, lower in the east, and with curved roofs because of the high density of buildings surrounding it. Its east side is lower so that problems such as blocking sunlight can be avoided. Meanwhile, noise barriers are set up to reduce interference.

Overall retention of the old Qinghe Station

During the construction of Qinghe Station, the old station was moved for 84.5 meters. In the future, the old Qinghe Station which was built more than 110 years ago will be kept intact on the southern side of the newly built station and serve as a museum.
