Beijing's new airport wins city's highest honor of construction quality

The terminal building and passenger transfer center of the Beijing Daxing International Airport recently won the Great Wall Cup Gold Award for Building Structure — the city's highest honor for construction quality.

In terms of construction management, the core area project of the Beijing Daxing International Airport integrates information technology and construction technology, well implementing the concepts of standardization, industrialization, informationization and environment friendliness, said a person in charge at the contracting company, Beijing Urban Construction Group.

The person in charge said the company applies smart construction technology to solve complex node construction problems of the project. For instance, the company used the world's most advanced measuring robots and 3D scanners to pinpoint various locations; it used two steel trestles with a total length of 1,100 meters as horizontal transport tracks, which effectively solved the transport problem of ultra-large plane structures. Automatic monitoring systems for temperature field monitoring, displacement field monitoring and the like rendered solid support for the handling of the country's largest single concrete slab. It was thanks to these innovative measures that construction has been going on smoothly, the person in charge said.

Take also for instance the construction of the concrete structure in the core area of the terminal building. The concrete structure is 513 meters in length and 411 meters in width, with steel bars used in the mainstay weighing 240,000 tons. Although 27 tower cranes were deployed on site, they could hardly meet the construction requirements. To this end, the construction team made best use of the post-casting space of the existing structure and set up two steel trestles with a total length of 1,100 meters as the horizontal transportation tracks. Moreover, they designed remote-controlled large tonnage vehicles to slide on the trestles. After the two trestles were connected, the work efficiency was improved by three to four times, which effectively solved the transport problem.

In addition to the various engineering innovations, the construction company adopted green management throughout the construction process. The application of the sewage treatment system, air source heat pump system, solar energy, concrete construction waste recycling, etc., not only reduced environmental contamination during construction, but avoided the waste of resources.
