A total of 15 people were confirmed dead as of 5:00 a.m. on Sunday after a 31-vehicle pile-up at an expressway toll station in northwest China's Gansu province on Saturday evening, according to local authorities.

Another 44 people were injured, 10 of whom are in critical condition.

A police statement said a heavy truck lost control after a 17-km downhill section and crashed into a line of vehicles waiting outside a toll station on the Lanzhou-Haikou Expressway at 7:21 p.m. on Saturday. The toll station, a gate way to Lanzhou, the capital city of Gansu province, is closed.

The truck was around 50 meters from the toll when the incident happened.

The driver, who sustained minor injuries is now in police custody. He said brake failure was behind the pile-up, but police are currently working on the cause.

The heavy truck reportedly belongs to a logistics company in northeast China's Liaoning province.
