Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei surpasses 6 trillion yuan in total GDP over 3 quarters

Since the implementation of the coordinated development strategy, the economy of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region has been booming. According to data released by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in the first three quarters of this year recorded a total GDP of 6.14 trillion yuan (US$884.11 billion). Beijing’s GDP reached 2.15 trillion yuan, Tianjin 1.47 trillion yuan, and Hebei province 2.52 trillion yuan, with growths of 6.7 percent, 3.5 percent and 6.6 percent, respectively.

According to a report from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics, the region’s economy was in good shape in the first half of the year. Industrial upgrade has brought good results, economy efficiency has improved and the coordinated development has continued to move forward.

Industrial upgrade

The economic structure of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region has been continuously adjusted and optimized, and the upgrade of industries was effective, the report says.

In terms of the manufacturing industry, in the first three quarters, the added value of two industries above the designated scale in Beijing — high-tech industry and strategic emerging industry — increased by 16.8 percent and 11.2 percent, respectively, and their proportions in all industries above the designated scale continued to expand.

The added value of Tianjin’s high-tech industry increased by 9 percent, a rise of 2.2 percentage points over the first half of this year. The added value of strategic emerging industry increased by 5.1 percent, an increase of 2.3 percentage points. The output of new products increased rapidly. The output of new energy automobiles and industrial robots increased by 5.3 times and 1.2 times, respectively, while the output of service robots, optoelectronic devices and lithium-ion batteries increased by 86 percent, 52.6 percent and 38 percent, respectively.

The equipment manufacturing industry in Hebei, as the main driving force of industrial production growth, increased by 5.4 percent year on year. It contributed to 31.3 percent of the industrial growth of all industries above the designated scale, an increase of 12.4 percentage points over the first six months of this year.

In terms of the service industry, from January to August, Beijing’s strategic emerging service industry and high-tech service industry above the designated scale maintained a rapid growth in revenue. Hebei high-tech service industry developed quickly, with a year-on-year increase of 6.7 percent in revenue, an increase of 1.8 percentage points over the first half of this year.

Efficient operation

“The economic operation of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region is becoming more environment-friendly and efficient. It has brought more economic benefits to enterprises as well as continuous improvement of the ecology and environment,” said an official in charge at the statistics bureau.

Data shows that in the first three quarters, the energy consumption per added value unit for industries above the designated size decreased by 5.5 percent. Among 39 industries, 25 industries’ energy consumption per added value unit decreased, and the number in 12 industries fell by 10 percent.

Tianjin has been promoting green manufacturing and improving energy efficiency. The energy consumption per added value unit of industries above the designated scale has continued to decline.

Meanwhile, the industrial energy consumption of industries above the designated scale in Hebei has been decreasing for 18 consecutive months. Those energy-consuming industries have been running at a low level. The added value of six high-energy-consuming industries grew by 2.5 percent, which is 1.2 percentage points lower than the growth rate of all industries above the designated scale. The energy structure in Hebei has also been continuously optimized. The consumption of new energy such as natural gas and biofuel has grown rapidly, and the utilization of new energy resources such as wind power, solar energy and biomass has grown too.

Benefiting from the industrial upgrade and adjustment of energy structure, the air quality in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei has improved. In the first three quarters, the average concentrations of PM2.5 in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei were 50 μg/m3, 46 μg/m3, and 51 μg/m3, decreasing by 16.7 percent, 23.3 percent, and 20.3 percent year-on-year, respectively.

Livelihood improvement

The coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region has improved the livelihoods of local residents, according to the report. In the first three quarters, disposable income per capita in Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei were 46,426 yuan, 31,407 yuan and 17,233 yuan, a year-on-year increase of 8.9 percent, 6.7 percent and 9.2 percent. The growth rate for the three quarters was 0.1 percentage points higher than the first half of the year.

The employment situation also remained stable. In the first three quarters, the registered urban unemployment rate in Beijing remained at a low level of 1.44 percent, and the newly employed population was 366,000. The number of persons employed in Tianjin also increased steadily by 367,600, a year-on-year increase of 2,500 people. The registered urban unemployment rate at the end of September in Hebei was 3. 27 percent, which remained within the expected range.

In regards to spending, service spending accounted for 54.4 percent of the total market spending and contributed to over 70 percent of the total growth. The spending structure of Tianjin has been transformed. The online retail sales of physical products increased by 34.1 percent, higher than the national average. The spending structure of Hebei has also been optimized and upgraded. The retail sales of products such as communication equipment, household appliances and audio equipment maintained a growth rate of more than 10 percent, higher than the same period last year.
