An enclosed field for testing self-driving automobiles will be built in Beijing on a piece of construction land of about 200,000 square meters, and is expected to be commissioned in 2020.

The project to build the field in Beixiaoying town, Shunyi district, in suburban Beijing was approved recently, involving a total investment of about 480 million yuan (about US$70 million).

According to the project's plan, the test and evaluation base will integrate software development for testing intelligent networked automobiles, hardware research and development and testing, self-driving track, and other functions.

Moreover, domestic auto manufacturers and internet companies will build their research and development bases for new energy and intelligent vehicles there.

On this basis, Shunyi district authorities are aiming to build Beixiaoying into a self-driving automobile town with global renown. In the first phase, 7-kilometer self-driving roads, 800,000-square-meter enclosed testing fields (including the new 200,000-square-meter one), and a 200,000-square-meter incubation and transformation center are planned to be built on 25 square kilometers of land.

Meanwhile, the district will also develop its Longwan village — a mountainous region — into a recreational area featuring automobile-themed cultural attractions and tourist activities.
