Jialing district of Nanchong in Sichuan province was certified as "World Longevity Area" in August by the International Expert Committee on Active Ageing of INIA, said Shi Yi, the district chief, at a press conference held in Nanchong on Wednesday.

Jialing is the latest addition to China's record longevity areas with world-class recognition, after Hainan province's Chengmai county, Wanning city and Hainan Island, Hubei province's Zhongxiang city, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region's Hechi city, Hezhou city and Pubei county.

According to a joint survey conducted by the Population and Health and Longevity Professional Committee under the Chinese Social and Economic Systems Analysis Research Association (CSESARA) and the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2017 and 2018, there are more than 16,000 people over the age of 80 in Jialing district of Nanchong city, among whom, 3,000 are over 90 years old, 65 are centenarians and the oldest person is 113 years old.

At the same time, the longevity ratio, vegetation index, air pollution index, surface water quality index, average life expectancy, average years of education and the Engel's coefficient of the district are all in line with "World Longevity Area" standards.

Shi believes that the great natural environment, local filial culture, simple folk customs, kindness among people, and friendly neighborhood all contribute to the longevity of people who live there.

A total of 200 representatives and experts from the Development Research Center of the State Council, the China Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation, the China Research Center on Aging and other social groups attended the press conference and ensuing forum on health and longevity in Nanchong on Wednesday.
