Renewable energy will account for at least 10 percent of the total energy consumption of Beijing Daxing International Airport, which is currently under construction, according to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform.

With less than 10 months to go before the scheduled opening of Beijing Daxing International Airport, construction of its main bodies and supporting projects is well underway.

Renewable energy will be utilized right across Beijing’s new airport. Solar power facilities will be constructed on the roofs of the parking building, the cargo area, the business jet hangar and the energy center; shallow geothermal facilities will be set in the service areas around the detention basin, the business jet building and airfields; and sewage-source heat pumps will be used in the sewage treatment plant.

"For the sake of ensuring a safe and reliable energy supply, Beijing Daxing International Airport will combine the use of renewable energy with traditional energy sources," said a spokesperson for the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform.

Beijing’s new airport will feature solar photovoltaic systems in three areas: the cargo area, the east runway and the business jet hangar. When completed, they will be able to generate 6.1 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year, accounting for one percent of the total energy use of the airport.

Ground source energy will be able to meet a further 8 percent of the total energy demand. The project, located in the Yongding River’s detention basin, combines the use of ice storage and electric refrigeration technology. Once finished, it will power the heating and cooling systems across 2.57 million square meters of supporting buildings at the airport.

In addition to renewable energy, traditional energy sources will still play an important role in the airport’s power supply. In order to ensure the opening of the airport before the end of September 2019, the area’s power grid will be set up during the “13th Five-Year Plan” period. After completion, the power supply in the surrounding economic area will be more reliable, with a reliability rate of up to 99.9 percent and the average power outage time at below 30 seconds.
