Beijing built or renovated a total of 1,529 convenience stores in seven categories in 2018, beating the target of 1,400 set by the Beijing municipal government earlier this year, according to the statistic released by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Commerce. A survey conducted by the city's statistics bureau found that 86.7 percent of local residents expressed satisfaction about these stores in their communities and nearby areas.
One such store, named "E-Center" is located on South Xueyuan Road in Haidian district. The store is a combination of a 360-square-meter fresh food supermarket and a groceries store. More than 1,500 types of fresh produce, snacks, food supplies and other everyday items can be found at the store, which also offers self-service laundry, self-service recycling, watch repairs, key smith, and many other service facilities. The 24/7 groceries store is more than 100 square meters large, offering daily groceries as well as flowers and more than 4,000 books. There are also fast food restaurants and barbershops nearby.
Estimates showed that a total of 82 commercial complexes for residential communities and more than "E-centers" have been set up in the city.
In Huilongguan, Tiantongyuan and other areas that have insufficient space of convenience facilities, Beijing introduced unmanned convenience stores, vegetable-selling carts, express cargos, and other mobile convenient service facilities. The city has completed the construction of more than 700 mobile convenience service facilities of this kind in areas needing more daily convenience services.
The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Commerce, together with other departments, issued a "Guidance on the Standard of Commercial Ecological Allocation in Beijing," which directs the government of each district to draw up its own plan of building service facilities, with detailed and concrete planning for each street and community based on the opinions and suggestions of the residents. Dongcheng, Xicheng, Daxing, and Fangshan districts finished their plans, and other districts are expected to complete the task by the end of 2018.
Beijing now has about 46,000 convenient stores including produce markets and groceries stores. Among the sum, 18,000 are chain stores, and the six districts in the urban area are fully covered with basic convenient commercial service facilities.
