Five months after their birth, twin panda cubs, whose father was a wild giant panda, have recently received their names, Hehe for the male and Meimei for the female, reported China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Pandas.

The twin cubs were the first worldwide pair born in a program where female pandas in captivity are released to mate with male pandas in the wild, aiming to achieve genetic diversity in captive pandas.

The center in Southwest China's Sichuan province held a ceremony for naming the two cubs on Wednesday. According to the center, their names were from two major characters in two panda-themed cartoons.

The mother of the cubs is Caocao, released in February of this year into the wild, where she mated to give birth to the pair. In 2017, Caocao was also released to mate with a wild panda and had a male cub.
