Beijing will develop 100 parks and green spaces along the city's urban-rural boundary in 2019, in order to clarify the city borders and control the pace of its development.

This was according to an official from the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform on Sunday. The official said that the green boundary formed by the parks will have a total area of about 310 square kilometers and encompass six districts of Beijing.

In addition, the establishment of this green boundary is a vital part of the "Overall Plan on Beijing City (2016-2035)," a masterplan of the city's urban development. According to the plan, the parks and green spaces for the green boundary will account for 53 percent of all planned green spaces in the city.

The official said the municipal government will give equal attention to quantity and quality in building green space, while prioritizing locations and communities most in need of new parks for its residential demography, such as those with more children and retirees. The parks will be equipped with sandpits for young children, shaded common areas, and opera stages for public performances.

Another basic function for the green boundary is ecological. The city official said the green coverage rate of the new parks will be more than 90 percent, and the parks' designs will perfectly balance their recreational and ecological functions.

Beijing will begin construction on six parks in the green boundary area in 2019, the official said.
