The Tongzhou district government announced recently that it will start the construction of a grand theater, a museum, and a library in 2019, which would become cultural landmarks of the capital's sub-center.

Sui Zhenjiang, vice mayor of Beijing, said that the new sub-center of Beijing will adhere to the principles of high-quality development and meticulous planning, and make sure that every new project is built with high quality.

According to the general plan, the design of the new theater originates from the ancient granaries and ships carrying supplies. The facade of the theater is in the shape of a sailboat, and is designed with a dynamic roof contour. Inside the building, the concert hall, the opera house, and the theater are connected by a common pedestal, which also serves as a shuttle between the performance venues.

The design of the museum is derived from the three elements of the ancient canal landscape, namely the boat, the sail, and the water. The building is divided into two parts each in the north and south, and its shape is like a huge sail on the southern side and a ship on the northern side. The northern and southern buildings are connected by a corridor, under which a river flows to reflect the buildings in the water.

The design of the library is originated from the "red print," a traditional Chinese cultural symbol. The library not only serves as a place for reading, but also works as a public open space. Inside it, two groups of mountain-like sculptures are designed, symbolizing that the library is a "mountain of books."

The floor space of the three structures is 80,000 square meters, 60,000 square meters, and 50,000 square meters, respectively.
