A 30 kilogram Husky raised by a family in Hunan Province was so excited to see its owner returning home that it jumped from their third floor balcony. The dog struck its owner in the head, breaking the man's neck and putting him into a coma.

"It was the fifth day of the Lunar New Year [February 9] and our family was coming home together," said the dog's owner, a man named Liu. "When I walked towards the front floor of our building, something hit me and I fainted."

At first, Liu thought that a wall had collapsed on him but he quickly realised that he had been hit by his dog, who had jumped from the balcony six or seven meters above.

Liu was immediately sent to the local hospital for treatment. Doctors found that he had a cervical fracture. Currently unable to move from his hospital bed, Liu is looking at surgery to try and repair some of the damage.

Liu said that he doesn't blame his dog for what happened, and has used a chain to prevent it from jumping off the balcony again.
