Chinese police detained 90 suspects for illegally selling, butchering and transporting pigs infected by African swine fever, the Ministry of Public Security said Friday.

About 15,000 pigs and 140 tonnes of raw pork and processed pork products were seized during the raids, said Li Jingsheng, a senior officer with the ministry, at a press conference.

Since the outbreak of African swine fever in China in August last year, police have allocated more officers and stepped up a crackdown on related crimes, Li said.

"The ministry will maintain an iron fist against such crimes and direct its resources and personnel at crimes that might lead to the spread of African swine fever or undermine food safety," he said.
