China's capital city plans to complete an afforestation project of about 16,667 hectares by the end of 2019, according to the Beijing Gardening and Greening Bureau.

A key part of the project is in the city's sub-center, where 467 hectares of green space will be added this year. And an afforestation project covering 87 hectares or so is currently under way in areas near Beijing's new Daxing International Airport, which is slated to open to traffic on Sept. 30.

Beijing also began building a 16,000-square-meter forest park and an almost 19,000-square-meter leisure park, respectively located in the north and south 2nd ring roads, on March 16. Construction for the main parts of both parks are expected to be completed by the end of August.

This year's afforestation project has introduced more scientific planning and designing as it tries to meet various conditions of different urban and suburban areas, said Gao Dawei, deputy director of the bureau.

Gao also said that the bureau is focusing on increasing biodiversity and creating an environment in which people can live in harmony with nature.

The bureau expects 60 percent of this year's afforestation project to be completed by the end of June.
