Beijing's Yanqing district was honored as China's "Healthy District" by the National Patriotic Health Campaign Committee recently. This was based on the district's overall performance from 2015 to 2017. 

The evaluation of national healthy cities or districts is conducted every three years. Yanqing, which used to be a county, launched its campaign to build itself into a healthy district in 2017, two years after it was administratively reorganized into a district. 

As part of its campaign, the district removed 124 dry latrines and reconstructed 38 public toilets. It also embarked on projects to improve the conditions of 120 streets and alleys. 46 communities and 8 urban villages saw an overall improvement in their living environment when the district began treating all its domestic waste in a nonhazardous way.

Yanqing has become a green place that is beautiful and livable. A resident surnamed Sun said he was very happy to learn that it was honored as a national healthy district, "I also contributed to this in my own way," he said.

"We will soon start building Yanqing into a National Health Promotion District, with the aim of coordinating urban development with people's health demands and further improving our environment for the Beijing International Horticultural Exposition slated to open on April 29 this year in Yanqing," said Lu Jinfang, deputy director of the district's health commission.

As expounded on by the World Health Organization, a healthy city is one that emphasizes healthy physical and social collaboration across multiple areas that ensure the high quality of homes, the ecosystem, well-being, public health, access to natural resources, and connectedness to the area's cultural heritage.
