Two parks, each located on one end of Beijing's central axis, recently broke ground. Construction authorities said the parks will be completed by the end of August.

The two parks-Ande City Forest Park and Yandun Park-are both key projects of afforestation and urban forest construction in Beijing. They are listed as key tasks on the agenda of the municipal and district governments for 2019.

Ande City Forest Park is located at the junction of the north central axis and the North Second Ring Road, with Ande Road to the north, Xibinhe Road to the south, Gulouwai Street to the west, and the Intercontinental Building to the east.

It covers a total area of about 16,000 square meters, designed to become a landscape with verdant forests, birds, and flowers to enhance surrounding areas. The city aims for the urban forest park to help to develop a rich biodiversity and harmonious symbiosis between people and nature.

At the other end of the central axis to the south of the South Second Ring Road, Yandun Park will reside with Yongdingmenwai Street to the east, the railway to the north, and the Gexinli Residential Community to the south. The Yandun Cultural Site in the project site is the southernmost point of Beijing's central axis.

With a total area of nearly 19,000 square meters, the park is designed to embody the concept of "urban forest plus." With tall local trees as the mainstay, the park will present a forest landscape featuring multiple layers of plants of different ages.

The design will tap into the local cultural heritages, emphasizing the protection and promotion of the historical heritage of Yandun, which is a square mound built in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).

The park will have forest trails and leisure venues to meet the needs of nearby residents. The designers will set rain-collecting ecological green spaces in the park and give due considerations to the treatment and secondary utilization of construction waste.

After the park is completed, it will form into a whole with the first phase project of the park on the west side, which is expected to enhance the landscape of the southern part of the central axis and better serve the residents in the area.
