Construction of the Beihuan looped traffic tunnel has completed in Beijing's sub-center, and the tunnel will open in October.

Located in the core zone of the Canal Business Area, the underground tunnel is 1.5 kilometers long with three levels. The first underground level is designed for vehicle traffic with two multifunctional lanes and one vehicle lane. Traffic in the tunnel is designed to go counter-clockwise at 30 kilometers per hour.

Placed at intervals along the tunnel walls are 22 exits leading to parking lots at the nearby shopping centers, offices, and apartments. This design is aimed at keeping vehicles off the surface level in the area, and it will form a 500 square meter "car-free zone."

In addition, the tunnel will be managed by a smart system to monitor traffic and control the signals in order to minimize congestion. Meanwhile, in order to reach the green construction standard, the tunnel's electromagnetic adsorption device will help to remove over 72 percent of PM2.5 particles from the exhausted gas of vehicles.

The Beihuan tunnel is one of many roadway and infrastructure projects in Tongzhou district, which include the already completed primary and secondary roads in the Canal Business District, and the municipal complex service center.

Together with the Tongzhou Dongguan tunnel and the planned Nanhuan looped traffic tunnel, the Beihuan tunnel will be a part of the massive multi-leveled transportation hub at the Tongzhou Canal Business Area.
