"Although the project is unfinished, the natural environment is so beautiful, I can feel it in advance. In the future, this will be an ideal spot for physical exercise,”said a middle-aged man surnamed Nie, who lives in Danzhutou community.

Nie is one of the nearby residents who has visited the greenway project underway now at Taojin Mountain. Construction is expected to be finished in late June. 

The Taojin Mountain Greenway is a section of the No. 2 Greenway plan from the Guangdong provincial government. The greenway starts at Cuiyi Road and ends at the Shawan Road exit at the Dawang Bridge. It is being built on the foundation of the former Patrol Line 2 on Taojin Mountain, which overlooks neighboring Hong Kong to the south. Patrol Line 2 used to be a patrol route for border guards before  1997.

Along the 7.07-kilometer-long belt lie Xianhu Lake Botanical Garden, Shenzhen Reservoir and the Wutong Mountain Scenic Area, making it a sightseeing corridor.

The greenway consists of three parallel lanes: a gray lane for pedestrians, a black lane for automobiles and a red lane for bicycles. 

Four main scenic types including flowers, forests, lakes and mountains also lie along the path, so that visitors can enjoy beautiful scenery throughout the year, said Yang Shiming, an official with the Luohu urban management and law enforcement bureau.

In addition, five unused guard posts along the old Patrol Line 2 have been retained and turned into sightseeing platforms.

There are eight AI interactive terminals along the greenway, through which the visitors can obtain information on parking, restrooms, tour guide services, and more.

Safety infrastructure facilities and facial recognition systems are in place to ensure visitors can get rapid help from the police and medical response staff in case of an emergency.

Also, a smart greenway system monitors and displays real-time environmental data, such as the temperature, wind speed, air pressure, ultraviolet intensity, density of PM 2.5 (fine polluting particles), and negative oxygen ion density.

The system can give visitors advance warning of inclement weather and natural disasters, including typhoon, thunderstorm, severe rainstorm, landslide and fire.

More than half of Luohu's area is designated as an ecological reserve zone. The construction of the Taojin Mountain Greenway is Luohu's latest move to bring people closer to its ecological resources. So far, Luohu has built 36.2 kilometers of greenway in its jurisdiction.
