Expo 2019 Beijing, the highest-profile international horticultural exposition, will open in Beijing's Yanqing district on April 29 and last through Oct. 7.

The organizing committee gave a press conference at the State Council Information Office on Wednesday, briefing the media on the preparation work.

Ecology prioritized in park construction and exhibition arrangement

According to Wang Hong, vice mayor of Beijing and deputy director of the Executive Committee of Beijing Horticultural Expo, all the construction and installation work in the expo park has been completed, all the preparation and the work teams are in place, and repeated drills and tests have been carried out. The expo park is now ready to welcome visitors from home and abroad, Wang said.

Workers in various gardens in the expo park are busy planting seasonal flowers to ensure that the flowers are in full bloom when the park opens.

The concept of "ecological priority" is well observed in the entire process of planning, design, construction, operation, and follow-up utilization of the expo park.

During the construction of the expo park, the existing ecology and landscapes were well preserved, about 50,000 native trees have been retained, and about 50,000 trees and 130,000 shrubs have been newly planted.

The expo park landscape features "one heart, two axes, three belts, four pavilions, and multiple zones," while integrating hills, forests, fields, flowers, waterways, and lakes.

The expo park will exhibit diversified contents. The China Pavilion will focus on displaying China's ecological culture, Chinese flower arrangement, and Chinese intangible cultural heritages. The International Pavilion will present the horticultural culture of the countries and regions along the Belt and Road by means of real objects as well as multimedia and interactive demonstrations.

A platform for international exchanges

Known as an "expo of gardens," Expo 2019 Beijing will have more than 100 gardens from various countries and regions, as well as different provinces and regions in China. They will showcase new varieties of horticulture, new technologies, new achievements, and new ideas.

Visitors to the expo park will not only be able to appreciate traditional Chinese flowers such as peony, orchid, and camellia, but also see different plants and vegetables, and experience diverse horticultural culture from 110 countries and organizations.

The international competition will be a highlight of the exhibition. The competition categories include outdoor exhibition gardens and indoor exhibition zones, as well as seven special matches of peony, rose, orchid, chrysanthemum, bonsai, combined potted plants, and the 2019 World Floral Competition.

Meanwhile, the organizers will put on the World Floral Conference 2019, the 71st annual meeting of the International Horticultural Producers Association (IAHP), and an International Green City Forum.

"These activities will provide important opportunities for international floriculture operators to exchange and seek cooperation and thus enhance the professionalism of the Expo 2019 Beijing," said Jiang Zehui, chair of the China Flower Association and deputy director of the Expo 2019 Beijing Organizing Committee. She said she believes that floriculture, as a messenger of beauty and peace, is able to promote international exchanges and cooperation in green development.

Visitor experience utmost in the expo park

According to the organizing committee, two tests and corresponding adjustment were conducted in April to improve visitor experience.

To improve the accessibility to the expo, Beijing's public transport authorities opened special bus lines, and arranged free shuttle buses for the parking lot. The park has prepared 11 temporary parking lots offering 20,000 parking places. Also, the expo is working to keep the security check time no more than 15 minutes by adding more staff and improving security check.

To guarantee convenient experiences in the expo, QR codes are provided to enable visitors to read notices and maps of the expo park. The expo has prepared for visitors over 170 battery carts and two routes for sightseeing, which can reach almost every scenic spot in the park.

The park seeks to meet the dining need for all 60,000 visitors by supplying mostly fast food and Chinese food catering services.

The expo has set three sightseeing routes opening at different time. The special night & day ticket allows visitors to enter the park after 4 pm to enjoy the night scene, and to come back to the park the following day.

To ensure traveling comfort in the park, the organizing committee advocates real name booking so that the number of visitors in the park can be controlled and the transport arrangement can be made in due time.
