The construction of the Liantang Port has been recently completed and it has passed the preliminary inspection for construction quality and fire protection, according to the Bureau of Public Works of Shenzhen Municipality.

This means that the Liantang Port is ready for its opening in September this year as planned, making it the first time Shenzhen will integrate its border defense, inspection and quarantine and customs clearance in its ports. This marks another step forward in the promotion of the internal connectivity of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The Liantang Port, a key project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong cooperation, will be the seventh land port connecting Shenzhen and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It will be a comprehensive port handling both freight and personnel, which will mainly be between Hong Kong and the eastern part of Shenzhen.

The Liantang Port covers a total area of 17.4 hectares, comprising the visitors' inspection building, freight inspection site, cross-border bridge and supporting facilities. Construction began in November 2013, and the total area that underwent construction was 149,000 square meters.

30,000 travelers are estimated to go through the port, and nearly 18,000 vehicles cross the border daily.

On the Hong Kong side, the project that connects the Liantang Port is still under construction and will open at the same time as the latter, in September 2019. Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point will be the first port in Hong Kong not bordered by forbidden zones thereby enabling people to drive directly to the port, park the car and go through the port, according to a official of the Bureau of Public Works of Shenzhen Municipality.
