A new branch of Beijing Friendship Hospital opened in Beijing's Tongzhou district on Wednesday. The branch said it is using "internet plus" technologies to offer patients self-help services.

Gao Xiaojun, spokesperson for Beijing Municipal Health Commission, said the new branch is one of the key measures to implement major national strategies for the coordinated development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. As the first Grade-A tertiary hospital in Tongzhou district, the Tongzhou branch of Beijing Friendship Hospital will further improve the local healthcare system and offer better healthcare services for nearby residents and neighboring areas. Gao said this would promote the balanced allocation of medical resources and coordinated regional development.

The branch began a trial run in December 2018. It now 493 beds, and receives an average of 2,400 patients per day, peaking at 2,800.

The "internet plus" technologies have helped the Tongzhou branch become a "smart hospital." Mobile payments and various kinds of self-help services-from arranging a wheelchair to registering for an appointment-has brought much needed convenience to seeing a doctor or specialist. In addition, the process of filling a prescription has been streamlined by mobile payment using a QR code.

Xin Youqing, Party Secretary of Beijing Friendship Hospital, said the Tongzhou branch is committed to improving healthcare services and innovation capabilities in order to better meet people's needs.
