Southwest China's Yunnan province destroyed a total of 14.1 tonnes of drugs on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which falls Wednesday.

In addition, over 3 tonnes of drug plants and controlled substances were also destroyed in campaigns across the province on the same day.

Yunnan is a major front in China's battle against drug crime as it borders the Golden Triangle. Local police said about 28.3 tonnes of drugs were seized and 12,701 suspects arrested last year.

Another 3,530 suspects were captured along with 11.5 tonnes of drugs and 823.9 tonnes of precursor chemicals from January to May this year.
