The world's first two remote orthopedic surgeries using 5G were successfully conducted in Beijing on Thursday.

Tian Wei, a renowned spinal surgeon and president of Beijing's Jishuitan Hospital, used the new 5G data network and remotely controlled robotic arms to perform orthopedic surgeries for two patients respectively located in southern China's Zhejiang and Shandong provinces.

Both surgeries began simultaneously at 9:05 a.m. Tian, operating from Beijing and manipulating robotic instruments hundreds of kilometers away in Jiaxing and Yantai cities, successfully implanted spinal pedicle screws at the optimal target sites. At 9:40 a.m., the key parts of the two surgeries were successfully completed.

Tian said he believes the low-latency 5G network has solved problems like video lag and remote control delay, and ensured a truly real-time operation. He said the 5G-based process would enable high-level experts from elite hospitals to help with patients in remote areas, where experienced doctors are not easy to find.

He said the medical health industry will also integrate more closely with AI and 5G technologies, providing better healthcare services for patients.

The 5G communications technologies used in the two surgeries were a collaboration between Huawei and China Telecom.
