Beijing's Daxing district stepped up efforts to improve the living environment of 373 villages in its rural area.

In Taiziwu village, cars parked in disorderly fashion in the past now line up in the parking areas, and the once crowded streets have become spacious and tidy.

According to Li Jinlong, Communist Party of China (CPC) branch secretary of the village, local authorities discovered over 1,100 structures that failed to follow building regulations, involving 758 households.

To encourage other villagers to demolish or renovate these buildings, a CPC member first volunteered to raze his own irregulated building. The rest of the village households followed suit and signed agreements of voluntary demolishment within 15 days in June.

Beiyanfa village has also embraced efforts to clean and tidy up its streets after demolishing irregulated buildings. Within one month, a total of 18,000 square meters of irregulated buildings were demolished, and 21 major streets in the village were widened from an average of less than 3 meters to around 11 meters.

After demolishment, the village organized a team of local volunteers for the daily cleaning and environment protection of their neighborhood. They also planted fruit-bearing trees along the streets.

Now, the village is working to provide modern plumbing to every household, and it is also planning to plant ornamental trees along the streets and build sightseeing corridors and pavilions in open spaces.
