Beijing Future Science Park, originally a 10-square-kilometer office park in the city's Changping district, has been tapped to become a new tech hub in the Chinese capital.

The boundaries of the science park has been drastically expanded to encompass higher-education institutions and newly planned office buildings. The totally planned construction area for Beijing Future Science Park now sits at 170.6 square kilometers, with an east zone, a west zone, and the central green space.

The schools and research institutions, including Shahe University Park and Zhongguancun Life Science Park, have been drawn into the Future Science Park's west zone. The zone has a planned construction area of 60.7 square kilometers to be used for advanced research on energy, manufacturing, and medicine.

The east zone is planned to house enterprises in its 43.5-square-kilometer area. Fourteen state-owned enterprises such as State Grid, Huaneng Group, National Energy, and China Telecom have already taken offices in the area.

Beijing Future Science Park is aiming to create a resource-sharing model between the two zones to facilitate innovation and foster talent. To that end, a 66.4-square-kilometer "ecological green heart" is planned at the core of the new tech hub to connect the two zones and form a livable space.

Wu Xiaoli, executive deputy director of Beijing Future Science Park, said the park is targeting the year 2020 to take initial shape as a green and livable place with a full set of urban functions. The next goal is 2035 when it will become a business-friendly and sustainable city, as well as a world-leading hub of technological innovations.
