The Intellectual Property (IP) Court of China's Supreme People's Court (SPC) opened its first circuit trial Tuesday at the SPC's Third Circuit Court in Nanjing, eastern China's Jiangsu Province.

The trial involved cases regarding disputes over a water pump invention patent between appellant Wang Yeci and five defendants including a water pump manufacturer based in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province.

According to the SPC, the trial required specimens of the heavy-weight patented products to be dismantled and thoroughly examined, which involved professional techniques that cannot be fully illustrated through remote video trial.

In the meantime, as all six parties involved in the cases are in Jiangsu Province, a circuit trial nearby made it more convenient for them to present themselves in court, the SPC said.

The trial, which was broadcasted online, was attended by more than 80 people including press and local judges, as well as students and teachers from Nanjing University and other higher education institutions.

The verdict will be announced at a later date.

The IP Court of the SPC was established on Jan. 1, 2019 in Beijing, mainly hearing cases on appeal over patent and other IP rights disputes. It opened its first trial on March 27.
