Beijing-awarded role models, newly-weds and family representatives attended a special celebration of the ancient Qixi Festival on Wednesday night entitled "Meet me at the Summer Palace."
The festival is based on a cherished old legend of the Chinese people concerning a cowherd and a weaver girl (represented by especially bright stars in the ancient sky) separated by a vast distance that can only be bridged on one day of the year. It is a time to celebrate undying love.
The event began with a lighting ceremony at 8 p.m., when both sides of the famous Seventeen-Arch Bridge, Kunming Lake and many buildings of the imperial summer resort were illuminated.
After that, traditional Chinese plays such as the Kunqu Opera "The Peony Pavilion," Shaoxing Opera "The Butterfly Lovers" and Huangmei Opera "Cowherd and Weaver Girl" were performed.
In addition to Chinese visitors, the Information Office of the Beijing Municipal People's Government, one of the organizers of the event, also invited nearly 40 journalists from 33 countries and regions, including Russia's RT, Channel One Russia, Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun and China Arab TV.
