Typhoon Lekima has left one dead and several others injured in Taiwan as of Friday evening, the island's emergency response authorities said.

The individual killed was reported to be a man in Taipei who fell out of a tree as he tried to trim it as the typhoon struck. He died in hospital after medical treatment failed.

Electricity was cut off for over 80,000 households and around 700 flights were canceled or delayed as Lekima brought strong winds and torrential rains to Taiwan from late Thursday to Friday, authorities said.

The local meteorological department cleared the land alert for Lekima Friday evening as it continued moving northward, but warned threats still exist for sea waters to the north of Taiwan and in the northern parts of the Taiwan Strait.

The sea alert is expected to be cleared Saturday morning.
