The Xinhua-run Oriental Outlook magazine and think tank Liaowang Institute have been jointly working to select the happiest cities in China of 2019 and will release the result in November.

There are 200 candidates, among which 100 are cities at prefecture-level and above, including Beijing, Shanghai and provincial capitals such as Hangzhou, Nanjing and Chengdu, while the other 100 are county-level cities and districts.

The candidates were chosen based on the lists of happiest Chinese cities released in previous years as well as the cities' competitiveness and comprehensive strength indexes.

The annual activity to select the happiest cities in China has been held for 12 years in a row, with participation by more than 900 million people.
