CCTV:

During the demonstrations in Hong Kong, a large number of young people rushed to lead the rallies, and there was even radical violence. What is your opinion regarding the issue about young people in Hong Kong? Thank you.

Xu Luying:

Thank you for your question. We have noticed that some young people have, indeed, participated in a series of protests and violent clashes, and some have blatantly violated the law, which is heart-breaking for us. Any discerning person can see through the recent violence and conflict in Hong Kong – some rabble-rousers are acting as behind-the-scene manipulators. Regardless of young people's well-being, these rabble-rousers are misleading young people, using them as pawns and cannon fodder to achieve their political ends. These rabble-rousers are slavishly dependent on foreign forces, thinking this may bring them some recognition. They are manipulating these young people to endanger Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, and undermine the principle of "one country, two system." As their ill intentions become increasingly explicit, I think more and more young people in Hong Kong will realize the true motives of these troublemakers, and reflect on their own wrongdoing and mend their ways.

During the process of escalation in Hong Kong, we have also profoundly realized that there are problems existing in education for young people in Hong Kong. Youth is a significant period for one to develop his views on life and values. At this point, loving his country and his motherland, should be the first lesson at school. However, unfortunately, such a lesson is missing in many classrooms and schools in Hong Kong. When many teachers incite their students to participate in protests, and even in violence, and when parents don't stop their children from becoming protestors, can we simply blame these young people for everything?

Therefore, I feel that there should be a correct educational guidance both in school and at home. Patriotic education and national education for young people in Hong Kong should be strengthened, so as to ensure they understand the country and its people, and its history and culture from an early age in a comprehensive, profound, and objective way. The healthy development of young people should be taken good care of throughout the society; meanwhile a favorable, harmonious, stable social environment built on the rule of law should be provided. Hong Kong's young generation is also China's young generation, and they are the future of Hong Kong as well as of China. The central authorities always pay attention to the development of young people in Hong Kong. We are also fully aware that there are many difficulties and confusions that face them while growing up, and we feel a lot of sympathy for them. Nevertheless, these difficulties and confusions cannot be resolved by violence or violation of the law. If young people in Hong Kong could step out and visit the mainland more often, getting a global outlook, they would feel that our country is at a crucial stage for achieving prosperity and development, as well as national rejuvenation. If they could connect their own future and destiny with the nation's prosperity and development, they can have a bright future with enormous potential. Thus, I hereby caution some young people who have participated in protests, or even in violence: Mend your ways and pull back before it is too late. Get back on the track built on rule of law and order, and protect the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong, rather than continuing to take a further step towards evil and danger. Thank you.
