Beijing's sewage treatment rate has increased from 83% in 2012 to 93% in 2018, and its daily treatment capacity doubled in the past six years.

According to reports, Beijing carried out two three-year plans to improve water environment since 2013. Over those six years, Beijing increased its sewage treatment capacity by more than the previous 10 years combined.

The Huaifang Water Recycling Plant, the largest of its kind in Asia, was one of several projects in the first three-year plan released in 2013.

After becoming operational in October 2016, the underground plant in southwestern Beijing has been able to recycle up to 600,000 cubic meters of sewage a day and serve an area of around 137 square kilometers. It has helped to improve water quality and support water treatment in the city's southwestern urban areas.

According to plant manager Zhang Wenchao, a wetland park of the same size as the water treatment plan was built above ground to create more green space for the local community.

Apart from the Huaifang plant, more water recycling plants and sludge treatment facilities were built across the city in the past six years, greatly improving wastewater treatment efficiency and water quality in lakes and rivers in Beijing.
